WINCHESTER CEMETERY
Winchester-East Road, Carnamah, Western Australia 6517
The Winchester site is a beautiful bush cemetery.
Stroll and reflect
I’ve always felt like cemeteries are like art galleries.
The environment is quiet and serene.
The shapes, decorations, and titles of the ‘sculptures’ (headstones) command you to look at them.
And all the while, the actual information on the headstones is always thought provoking… just like art is. The cemetery has been in operation since 1927 so there are many plots to view.
Blue and I have visited this cemetery many times now and we always appreciate its tranquility. It also boasts the most spectacular collection of banksia trees on the east side of the cemetery. They are glorious and the bees who spend time there provide a delightful soundscape.
This may sound a bit crazy, but when we visit the cemetery, Blue and I always make sure to ‘visit’ Harry and Eunice Rowland. They originally owned the Carnamah house that Blue and I reside in, so in a unique way, they feel like family to us. xx
Just checking on Harry and Eunice.
By the way, the Carnamah Historical Society and Museum have collated a HUGE amount of information about those who are buried at the Winchester Cemetery. Click on the button below to access their free database.

LATHAM CENTENARY PARK
1 Britt St, Latham Western Australia 6616
Quriky and rusty - Fun and dusty
Located not too far way in the Shire of Perenjori is a wonderful place full of fun, humour and environmentally friendly creativity! This Park is a wonderful example of how to repurpose ‘old stuff’ to create something unique and new. There are nooks and crannies for the dogs to sniff out as well as established paths that are kind to older knees.
Whenever Blue and I have guests that come up to Carnamah, we ALWAYS take them to this park. Everyone loves how quirky and interesting it is. (We actually refer to as the ‘Latham Junk Yard Park’ because we love seeing the ‘junk’ on display.)
Be sure to check out the names of the founding families and awesome folks of the area on the Centenary Wall, hence the name of the park! BTW, there’s a fridge library onsite if you need a new book to unwind with after a day of travelling and there are toilets close-by, so you can leave your shovel in the car for this visit.

BUNJIL ROCKS
Iona Road, Bunjil, Western Australia 6623
another world
Located not too far way in the Shire of Perenjori is the MidWest version of Uluru: Bunjil Rocks.
This huge outcrop of rocks provides an adventurous walking experience and the chance to watch the tadpoles that thrive in the rock pools present in the winter months. There are old campfire pits and rusty old billy’s, so it also a great place for an overnight camp. (No toilet facilities however, so be sure to bring your own dunny paper and shovel if you do have a sleep-over here.) There is plenty of evidence that kangaroos spend time here (i.e., lots of kangaroo poo), but we’ve never actually seen one during our visits.
Blue and I have a little tradition where once a month we buy a box of chips from the Carnamah Roadhouse and eat them as we drive to Bunjil Rocks. When we arrive at the rocky outcrop, we stroll around, laugh and take photos of the unique rock formations and the moss that grows on them. In the winter and autumn months I adore just sitting by one of the rock pools watching the antics of the tadpoles. They are HUGE and ever so busy.
BOX OF CHIPS please
The Carnamah Community Roadhouse (BP Petrol Station) is located on Yarra Street across the road from the Supermarket. They sell ice and a range of takeaway food including pies, chips and burgers, (and DIM SIMS - Herby’s favourite).
The roadhouse is open daily from 7am to 7pm, however you can fill up your vehicle with petrol or diesel 24/7 using a debit or credit card. If you want to phone ahead a food order, you can call them on (08) 9951 1178.
